Iraqi security forces and Shiite fighters gather north of Baghdad as they take the fight to ISIS. It's interesting to see how the Iraqis have up-gunned the Hummers we gave them (or left behind). It would also seem that the bullet resistant windshields are doing their job.

Did we think to leave behind replacement windshields? Doesn't look like these are going to last through many more hits.

Those windshields were one of the few things that didn't have to get so heavily up armored. At least it seems, from when my dad was there in '03

Probably could have chosen a better colour than black, especially in the desert.

Probably more for attitude than concealment.

I wonder why thay are painted black? other than intimidation purposes it seems like a terrible tactical choice in the environment they are working in.

Back in 2002, the company I worked for was making ballistic glass for Buildings and some ford F350 vans being made into armored cash transporters. The Army came a-calling and brought a couple of Hummers and said "make these as bullet resistant as you can" I made THOUSANDS of those windshields. In several thicknesses and ballistic ratings but so very many of them. Also those viewports on the gun turrets, those too. The side windows are 12x12 with an additional offset of half inch polycarbonate on the inside. Those notched ones on the top are to allow the Ma Deuce to traverse left and right. We put a jig on the waterjet and would just leave the program running to notch those windows for lefts and rights. It ran so much the water in the tank got HOT. It was crazy how many of those we made. This was a small company, maybe thirty people total, including the office help. One night the door seal on the Autoclave failed and it exploded. Fortunately the building had only two people in it and both survived. That was that. Seeing those trucks makes me remember. Oh, the stories.

True. Ballistic glass only works through the combination of the glass's hardness and the polycarb's ductility. Lose one, and you dramatically reduce its effectiveness.
